i love red with charcoal as well. it's so bright, attention-getting , so it really goes well with a neutral color. i also like it with a light, creamy beige.
Love this combination. When I was in University, we had a guest lecturer in one class... she was wearing red and black. Said they were her "power colours." Since then I have loved red and black, but I really like the pairing of red with charcoal... tames it a bit, like you said. Beautiful.
